AMBER FLAME

2017-2021

A series of pyro-inspired artworks that were developed in affiliation with author C.C.Ostrander’s debut novel, Amber Flame.

“I am a fire-eater… And that means so much more than you think.”

The world had been at war for fifty-four years – at least, that’s what the rebels would say. In reality, the last true resistance had died with Duncan O’Rielly, and a peace won by blood had governed the Empire for the last twelve years. But when a young girl named Meygan and her two friends stumble upon a vagabond recluse and the cheerful archer who guards his land, they unwittingly set in motion events which will make or break the Empire’s iron hold. On the run with the two objects which the Empire covets more than anything else, what began as a journey to find a way home rapidly descends into a race against time, a flight from the past, and a fight to postpone one final act of betrayal. The so-called peace, as the rebels see it, has lasted for twelve years, but the inevitable cannot be put off forever. The time has come for the wanderer – their last chance at salvation – to face his fate.

Amber Flame : a novel

- a touch-activated book light -

The book beckons. Its cover seems to consume all light around it, until there’s none left. You open it and let your finger trace the glimmering ink… a flame flickers just beneath the paper.

Hidden within the hallowed pages of an old book is a microcontroller rigged with a simple pressure sensor and some LEDs. The cover is blank and the blackest black. The parchment bears a few select words from the novel, along with a secret message. Darkness will reveal the key, marked in phosphorescent ink, where to place a finger and ignite the firelight.

- a motion-sensitive fiber optic wired glove -

As you twist your fingers nimbly, watch the embers glow all down your arm… a dusting of warm amber coats the dark fabric, dancing and breathing with you.

Sewn inside the lining of an old bandana, a microcontroller rigged with a flex sensor and LED is wired into the garment’s boning. The responsive light feeds into the outer layer of optical fibers, with a brilliant paisley pattern hand-embroidered over it. The gauntlet attaches to the fingers and laces up around the wrist for easy adjusting, and the rechargeable battery has a convenient USB connection.
